Understanding the Thermal Properties of Your Log Home and the Benefits of Log Walls

Understanding how to properly place your log home is important to unlocking its true thermal potential.

In order to get a better understanding of the natural benefits of using the thermal mass of logs to create the most ideal and natural home environment, there are some key ideas you need to understand.

Thermal Mass

A property of logs that allow them to store heat. For example, in an environment where outdoor temperatures fluctuate throughout the day, like Canada, the thermal mass can help manage temperature fluctuations naturally.

For example, thermal mass is storing heat from the days sunlight in the winter and releasing it back into the house at night or storing cold air from a summer night and releasing it back into the house during the day.

Solar Altitude

This is the angle of the sun relative to the earth’s horizon. What this means is that in the winter the sun is much lower to the earth than in the summer.

Using the understanding of solar altitude will help our experts in determining if your log home should be designed with covered porches or “eyebrows” in order to block the summer sun from warming the logs too much in the summer.

Allowing the winter sun to heat the logs is vital to creating a balanced and energy efficient home.

Geography

R-Value

This is a measure of how well walls, windows and ceilings trap air.

R-Value is a measure of how effective an insulation is, and local codes were created to keep buildings up to a specific R-value Standard. A Home can pass the R-Value code if the total building meets specific parameters. For instance, if the walls are not as high in R-value, the difference can be made up in the ceilings or windows.  

The most effective and economical buildings are composed of both a thermal mass and an R-value rating.

Chemical Environments

Reducing the amount of toxins and chemicals in our homes is becoming a major trend.

When you use a thermal mass system mixed with an R-Value ceiling you are removing almost ¾ of the chemical filled insulation and plastic barriers we use in modern construction. This in turn makes for a much cleaner and synthetic-chemical free home.
